Grade II Listed Historic Coaching Inn

The Bear Inn, Wincanton is a Grade II listed historic coaching inn, re-built in 1720 and located conveniently in Wincanton town centre just a short distance from the A303. We are the best place to enjoy the crackle of a real log fire, a satisfying meal in our restaurant and the company of family and friends in our well stocked bar.

With a large customer car park, the Bear Inn, Wincanton is perfect if you wish to break your journey or visit one of the many local attractions such as Stourhead, Longleat Safari Park or Wincanton Racecourse.

The Bear is Wincanton’s oldest Inn. Certainly the present building dates from 1720 when it was a coaching inn and mentioned by James Woodforde in his ‘Diary of a Country Parson’ when he visited Wincanton in 1761.

Ian and Jo Wainwright have been in the trade for over 30 years, and they have been the proud owners of the Bear Inn for more than 15 of those years. Their pub is listed as one of the TOP UK 30 pubs by Famous Grouse, as voted by Daily Telegraph readers; a proud accolade indeed.

For fans of Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series, Wincanton is twinned with the fictitious city of Ankh-Morpork and regular events are still held throughout the year.
